On July 11, 2025, DSET visited the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and held a strategic dialogue on liquefied natural gas (LNG) security and regional resilience together.
JOGMEC, operating under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), plays a central role in ensuring the nation’s stable supply of energy and critical minerals. It supports exploration, investment, and emergency response capabilities in the oil, gas, and LNG sectors, while also promoting decarbonization initiatives and infrastructure development essential to Japan’s energy transition.
The discussion centers on shared vulnerabilities between Taiwan and Japan in the face of rising geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Taiwan Strait. Dr. Jeremy Chang, CEO and Director of Economic Security Program, stressed the need for regional cooperation, noting that any disruption in the Taiwan Strait would significantly impact LNG shipping routes critical to Japan. Representatives from JOGMEC echoed this concern, underscoring the urgency of broader strategic dialogue in Japan on this matter. Dr. Tsaiying Lu, Director of DSET’s Energy Security and Climate Resilience Program, presented her team’s latest simulation work on Taiwan’s energy landscape under a potential blockade or quarantine scenario. She also discussed contingency planning and policy recommendations to strengthen Taiwan’s preparedness for supply disruptions.
DSET will continue to work with JOGMEC to further explore opportunities for deeper collaboration between Taiwan and Japan to bolster energy security and resilience in both traditional energy and the transition process, especially with the inevitable encounters of geopolitical challenges.
