DSET CEO Discusses Taiwan’s Economic Security Practices in SCSP’s Strait Forward Interview

Dr. Jeremy Chih-Cheng Chang, CEO of DSET, was recently featured as a guest on the latest episode of Strait Forward, a podcast hosted by the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), a leading Washington, D.C.–based initiative focused on U.S. technology and national security policy.

Co-hosted by SCSP’s Deputy Director of Foreign Policy, Channing Lee, and Director of Intelligence, Libby Lange, Strait Forward regularly features in-depth conversations with leading Taiwanese voices in technology, national security, and diplomacy. Past guests have included Taiwan’s Representative to the U.S., Alexander Tah-ray Yui, and former Minister of Digital Affairs, Audrey Tang.

In this episode, Dr. Chang and the hosts explore how economic security has reshaped the broader national security landscape. The discussion also covers U.S. efforts to protect its innovation base through investment screening, export controls, and other strategic tools.

Drawing from Taiwan’s extensive experience in countering economic coercion from China, Dr. Chang shared Taiwan’s pioneering approaches to economic statecraft. In particular, he highlighted Taiwan’s globally leading foreign investment screening mechanisms and its adoption of the strategic “N-1” principle to govern the flow of critical technologies.

Dr. Chang also emphasized Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to establish secure and trusted supply chains for critical technologies such as unmanned aerial systems, and underscored the importance of deepening U.S.-Taiwan cooperation in addressing geopolitical threats and safeguarding global technological leadership.

DSET and SCSP formalized their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in October 2024, with ongoing collaboration in key areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and dual-use emerging technologies.

As part of the SCSP 2025 AI+Expo held in early June, DSET hosted a side event titled Taiwan Tech & National Security: AI, Chips, Drones, and Energy Security. The session featured DSET’s international research fellows and U.S.-based experts engaging in discussions on strengthening Taiwan-U.S. cooperation in AI, semiconductors, unmanned systems, and energy resilience in the face of strategic competition with China.

SCSP also participated in DSET’s 2025 Annual Forum in Taipei last week. David Lin, Senior Director of SCSP’s Future Tech Platform, joined the panel AI Supply Chains: Taiwan’s Strategic Role in the Global AI Race, alongside speakers from DSET, Palantir Technologies, and Institut Montaigne.
