Wen-Ling Hong

Hong Wen-ling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and the Center for Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Research Director at the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology. She is a member of the Ocean Affairs Council under the Executive Yuan, the Underwater Cultural Heritage Review Committee of the Ministry of Culture, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Taiwan Women in Science and Technology Newsletter. Previously, she has served as the Chair of the Taiwan Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Association and as the Deputy Minister of the Ocean Affairs Council.

Entering the STS field in 2007, she has dedicated herself to interdisciplinary research and practice, promoting connections between the public and engineering operations, public communication of science and technology, gender and technology, and citizen engagement with marine issues. She organized a student’s ship model context for 13 years and has worked on the investigation and preservation planning of historic vessels, including the Free China and Hai Kung, and efforts to revive traditional shipbuilding and navigational culture.

Her in-depth research also includes the Kaohsiung gas explosion, the Sewol ferry disaster in South Korea, and air pollution monitoring. She participated in the Taipei Biennial’s Negotiation Theater and the production of the video series Opening the S Files. In recent years, she has focused on Taiwan’s establishment of offshore wind energy, science communication related to energy transition and net-zero technologies, and fostering innovation through technology’s organizational culture. Additionally, she was a trained support professional for breastfeeding and friendly pregnancy and childbirth initiatives.
