On 14 May 2024, Representative Lee Eun-ho and his colleagues from the Korean Mission in Taipei visited the Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology (DSET). The DSET team, including Convener Dr. Chen Dong-Sheng Chen, advisor Dr. Zsehong Tsai, Director Dr. Wen-Ling Tu, Deputy Director Dr. Hsien-Ming Lian, and research fellow Dr. Chih-Cheng Chang, welcomed them.
Representative Lee, who has extensive collaborations with international think tanks, initiated this visit upon learning that DSET focuses on technology policy and international cooperation from a cross-disciplinary and technological geopolitical perspective.
During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on economic security and the semiconductor industry. Dr. Chih-Cheng Chang mentioned that while Taiwan and Korea are often seen as competitors in the semiconductor industry, both countries are democracies that value freedom, suggesting that there is potential for cooperation beyond traditional concepts. Representative Lee responded with an example of chip production, noting that Korea excels in memory chips while Taiwan specializes in logic chips. By combining these strengths, greater achievements could be realized.
The exchange was pleasant and productive. Representative Lee expressed enthusiasm for introducing other scholars to DSET when they participate in academic conferences in Korea, thus expanding the network of exchanges. This meeting is seen as a starting point for building connections with Korean think tanks, deepening DSET’s engagement with the international community, and creating more opportunities for future collaboration.
